security threats against the u.s. consulate in benghazi. petraeus has been married for 37 years to holly petraeus who he met while a cadet at the u.s. naval academy in west point. he took the helm of the cia in september of 2011. in a statement late this afternoon the president thanked petraeus for his service adding, quote, i have the outmost confidence in acting director michael morel and the men and women who work every day to keep our nation safe. going forward, my thoughts and prays are with dave and holly petraeus who have done so much to help military families that their own work. petraeus took every the cia in september of 2011. of course, the political implications of all of this cannot be overlooked. the obama administration was already under intense scrutiny following the benghazi attack and possible leaks of intelligence information from operations in yemen. new questions now likely are to surface whether or not petraeus' affair may have compromised his position over the last years. >> there is also the issue of the fiscal cliff. both president obama and house speake

. we'll get into the particulars of virginia. how it matters and what it could tell us about the rest of the nation. the implications are many as virginia goes, well, is models for the rest of the nation may go. then there is the state of georgia. the polls have just closed there at 7:00 eastern and it, too, is too close to call. but then there is the state of indiana. "fox news" now projects governor mitt romney will win the state of indiana which president obama did win four years ago. that's a turnover. 5% of the votes in but the model suggests to us it is good gh to mitt romney according to the "fox news" decision team has won the state of indiana. conservatives he's got to have a different perspective. the leadership has to say no. i used this example and i want to use it again. i remember that house members and senators. they would hand out pens and these house members and senators would want a pen, because that had something to do with being a statesman, and a leader, and caring more about the country than just being reelected that has to be a change of mind. the president, i must say this, he's got to mix it up. he's got to be a little more lbj and bill clinton. if you're in politics you've got to pick up the phone. >> there is some short term business that can be done in this city. looming over the head of thousands of defense industry workers in this area. the republican house, or democratic senate were not able to come to an agreement on this, basically, because they were at lager heads for most of the summer. they come back now to this city. is this a chance to demonstrate the fact that despite the differences, despite that they were thrown into this caldron, that they can actually work together and maybe avoid these defense cuts.
